Could marijuana soon be sold at Costco?

The approvals in Colorado and Washington regarding the recreational use of marijuana was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg regarding how legalized marijuana would eventually apply in California. With the most populated state in the U.S. decriminalizing recreational use, it is only a matter of time before other states follow.

Essentially, a greater number of people are open to the notion of legalized marijuana use; especially considering how its effects are different from other dangerous drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines; all of which are listed as Schedule 1 drugs under federal law.

An example of these changing norms can be found at the retail level. It has been long rumored that mega-retailer Costco will begin to offer bulk high grade marijuana under its Signature brand. This is Costco’s “generic” brand under which the retailer offers a number of products, including shampoo, cereal, coffee and a host of other products.

The marijuana is supposed to available at all 237 Costco stores in the state of Washington. It will reportedly be produced and harvested exclusively by the Suquamish Tribe in Washington. Indeed, there is no word on exactly when the marijuana will be available, or if a deal has been finalized, but it is a poignant example of how attitudes are changing about marijuana use.

Nevertheless, marijuana possession is still a criminal offense in the state of Michigan, and a criminal record could lead to further, non-criminal sanctions particularly for college students. Because of this, it is essential to have an experienced criminal defense attorney if you are charged with possession, possession with intent to distribute or drug trafficking under federal law.
